Bodhi College is an educational charity. Your donation helps us make early Buddhist teachings accessible to everyone – regardless of financial means.
Who your donation supports
As a charity, we are dependent on the generosity of donors, alongside course fees, to enable us to operate.
When you make a donation, your money goes directly to our Development Fund and our Bursary Fund. The Development fund enables the college to continue developing and adjusting our programme to suit the needs and wishes of our community. It also helps to keep course prices down by covering a part of our core costs. The Bursary fund is also supported by your donations - which grants subsidies to people otherwise unable to access the course due to financial means.

Making the dharma freely available
The word for “generosity” in Pali and Sanskrit is dāna. For many Buddhist centres and communities in the West today the term “dāna” has come to serve as shorthand for an experimental economic system. Central to this system is a commitment to not placing a price on the dharma but making it freely available so that no one be excluded from receiving the teachings for financial reasons. At the same time, it allows the student to cultivate the virtue of generosity and become more conscious of their relation to money and resources.
Although we do of course, charge fees for our courses, there is a shortfall between all our overheads and costs and the amount we receive – as we strive to keep our prices accessible for everyone.
This is where your donations are essential for us to continue delivering our courses and offering the wisdom of the dharma to all people.
Where will your money go?
If you make a general donation to us, there are two main funds where your money will go.
- Our Bursary Fund – which grants subsidies to students looking to study our courses but do not have the financial means to pay the full course fee.
- Our Development Fund – which supports the college in our development of an ongoing programme of courses dedicated to studying the early teachings of the Buddha.
For more specific donations we have established individual Tribute Funds, which are dedicated to a member of the Bodhi College community (trustee, teacher, student, supporter etc) who has died. The fund is then directed towards a cause or area of the college that was especially dear to them.
To support our teachers, we also have a Teachers Support Fund, which is for specific campaigns to support our teachers in a time of great need.
Give In Memory
A tribute fund is a special way for us to remember dear friends, trustees and supporters of Bodhi College who pass away. Those who have been part of our dear Sangha and as such, contributed to Bodhi College in their own way.
This way, those who want to can leave donations in their honour via our dedicated webpage, which we will then use towards a fund or area in the college that was especially dear to them.

Gary was a dear friend and Trustee of Bodhi College, whose love of the Dharma was a passion in his life. See his memorial page and donate here. All funds will go towards community building which was an essential part of Gary’s contribution to the College.

Bodhi College is an independent charity and not aligned with any Buddhist orthodoxy. We aspire to recover core insights of the early Buddhist canon so as to develop fresh ways of understanding the Buddha’s teachings today. While making use of modern critical scholarship, our goals are not academic. We seek to provide a contemplative education that inspires students to realise the values of the Dharma in the context of this secular age and culture.
After having thought of your loved ones first, considering a gift for Bodhi College in your will, helps to ensure that we can continue this important work.
A bequest to charity is tax-free and can reduce the tax you pay on your entire estate, reducing inheritance tax.
How to leave a legacy to Bodhi College
Leaving a gift to Bodhi College is easy. There are two main types of gifts that you can leave in your will to Bodhi College:
- You can leave a specific sum of money or an item such as jewellery or a piece of art (pecuniary legacy);
- You can leave a share in, or all of, what’s left of the value of your estate after all bills have been paid and all other legacies have been distributed (residuary legacy).
If you would like to add a gift to Bodhi College to an existing will, you may be able to use a codicil. Adding a codicil to your will means there is no need to change the terms of your current will. It simply adds a new instruction, and is suitable for a small, straightforward change.
If the change is more significant or complex you should make a new will. Please keep in mind that you should always seek professional legal advice before making any changes to your will.

I further direct that the receipt of the Chief Executive or other proper officer of the said charity for the time being shall be a full and sufficient discharge for the said gift.
For a Pecuniary Legacy
I give the sum of £_____ (or the item specified) to Bodhi College, a company limited by guarantee (number 9561665) and a registered charity (1163320) of registered office address 4 Dartside, Totnes, Devon TQ9 5HL, UK, for its general charitable purposes. I further direct that the receipt of the Chief Executive or other proper officer of the said charity for the time being shall be a full and sufficient discharge for the said gift.
For a Specific Legacy
