Mindfulness Teachers’ Development Programme (MTDP)

4 modules in UK & Switzerland during 2016 – 2017

This programme is designed for those currently training in or teaching mindfulness based applications in contemporary settings, and can be attended either as an extended programme comprising all four modules or as individual modules. Over two years the modules will explore the foundations of mindfulness in Buddhist psychology and how these teachings inform contemporary mindfulness and continue to be a pathway to emotional and psychological healing and transformation.

The range of mindfulness based applications taught and practised today have their roots in the early teachings of the Buddha that focused upon understanding how our world of present moment experience is constructed. Classical and contemporary mindfulness teachings converge in their commitment to understanding the nature of distress, how it is caused and brought to an end.

Each module will include extensive teaching, formal practice and discussion. The teachers of this programme are all currently involved in training mindfulness teachers in university and other settings. The programme is supported and recognized by both Exeter and Oxford Universities as a significant aspect of continuing professional development:

Through participation in this programme you will:

  • Deepen your understanding of the breadth and depth of mindfulness as a pathway to emotional and psychological change.
  • Continue to develop your own personal practice in the company of peers.
  • Enhance your competence, skills and understanding as a mindfulness teacher.
  • Understand the links between early teachings of mindfulness and their application today.

This programme is not a training in clinical skills but meant to compliment recognized mindfulness trainings.

The daily schedule will be comprised of sustained silent meditative practice in the mornings; afternoons will be given to teaching and discussion blocks; evenings will be dedicated to personal practice and group enquiry. There will be periods of silence and time for informal networking; the theory and practice ratio will be 50/50.

The content of the four modules will comprehensively cover the core Buddhist Teachings underpinning contemporary mindfulness approaches.

Teachers

CHRISTINA FELDMAN is a co-founder of Gaia House and a guiding teacher at Insight Meditation Society, Barre, Massachussetts. The author of a number of books, she has been teaching insight meditation retreats internationally since 1976. She is one of the teaching faculty of the CDPP programme, dedicated to the study and application of theearly teachings of the Buddha and is engaged in teaching the Buddhist psychological foundations of mindfulness to those training to teach mindfulness-based applications in England, Belgium and the Netherlands.

John PeacockJOHN PEACOCK is both an academic and a Buddhist practitioner of nearly forty years. Trained initially in the Tibetan Gelugpa tradition in India, he subsequently spent time in Sri Lanka studying Theravada. He lectured in Buddhist Studies at the University of Bristol, is Associate Director of the Oxford Mindfulness Centre and teaches on the Master of Studies programme in MBCT (Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy) at Oxford University. John has been teaching meditation for more than twenty five years and is a Gaia House guiding teacher.

AkincanoAKINCANO M. WEBER is a Swiss Buddhist teacher and psychotherapist. A former monk, he has lived and practiced for 20 years in European and Thai Forest monasteries. Particular interests are early Buddhist texts, stillness and contemplative psychology. He is guiding teacher of Atammaya Cologne, Germany, part of the CPP programme, the MBSR-Institute Freiburg and teaches meditation and Buddhist Psychology in secular and traditional contexts in Europe and overseas. www.akincano.net

Chris CullenCHRIS CULLEN works as a mindfulness teacher and psychotherapist. He trained to teach insight meditation with Christina Feldman and did the Community Dharma Leader training at Spirit Rock.
Chris co-founded the Mindfulness in Schools Project and is on the teaching team at Oxford University Mindfulness Centre, teaching mindfulness courses for students and for MPs and peers in the Houses of Parliament.

  • What is mindfulness? A comprehensive understanding of the nuances of mindfulness that make it a dynamic and effective tool for bringing about transformation and serve as a foundation for insight.
  • Understanding dissatisfaction and different dimensions of transformation through mindfulness.
  • Why Buddhist Psychology? What does Buddhist psychology offer to contemporary teachings of mindfulness?
  • Satipatthana for MBI: This module will explore foundational texts that underpin all contemporary MBIs.

The Existential Challenge (MTDP Module 2) – Christina Feldman & Chris Cullen

October 3, 2016 – October 7, 2016; Sharpham, Devon, UK
  • Three universal characteristics – acknowledgment and reconciliation. Dukkha – distress, anguish and struggle, impermanence and instability and non-self are part of the fabric of all of our lives. Avoiding and fearing these characteristics serves only to deepen distress. Understanding and reconciling our lives with them are pivotal insights in freeing the mind from distress.
  • Embodiment – more than a concept. Mindfulness teachers teach not just through technique but through the qualities that they embody in their teaching. We will explore what embodiment means both personally and professionally.
  • Understanding self-perception and the cognitive chain. This part of the module will investigate the way in which self perception and our world of experience is constructed, moment to moment.

The construction of experience: Aggregates (khandhas) and Dependent Arising (paticca-samuppāda)

A look at the teachings on the Aggregates and Dependent Arising offer effective conceptual maps to disclose the complexity of what we call “experience". They open up possibilities for insight and transformation of dynamic patterns that run through our everyday lives. Both teachings address what Buddhist Psychology calls “becoming” and “identification” and offer specific tools and a psychologically pragmatic approach to mindfully re-form and ultimately free ourselves from self-constructs.

Universal Empathy (MTDP Module 4) – Christina Feldman & John Peacock

Brahmavihāras – friendliness, compassion, joy and equanimity are seen in Buddhist psychology as being indispensable allies in healing distress. They are the qualities that are equally felt to be most elusive in distress states. In this module we will explore how these qualities are explicitly cultivated in Buddhist meditative pathways and implicitly taught and developed in contemporary mindfulness based applications. The necessary interwoven nature of mindfulness practice and the Brahmavihāra will be explored.

The deposit payments for modules in Switzerland do not include the cost of accommodation at Beatenberg, which is to be booked directly with the venue once you have booked a place with Bodhi College at a cost of CHF405 for 5 nights full board (£317 approx, depending on exchange rates).
